- SUMMER 2008 NEWS BULLETINPosted on: 2008-07-02PLEASE READ - IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL SEAGATE RESIDENTS
Summer is here! As residents of Seagate we can just stay home and save gas and money. We have swimming, tennis and spa¡¦s to enjoy. The pool is heated and ready to be enjoyed and for the first time in 3 years all of the spas are up and running. Please, remember that as homeowners we pay for these amenities with our homeowner dues. If you see something that doesn¡¦t look right it is your right and responsibility to ask the person if they are a resident or guest of a resident. If the rules are not being followed you also have a right and responsibility to ask that the rules be followed. We have had a problem with people climbing the fences to use our facilities. This is something that puts us all at risk. Be Aware!
Summer also is a time for more children to be outside and using the facilities. An adult MUST accompany all children under the age of 14 when using the pool or spas. We also have children playing and riding skateboards etc. in the streets at this time of year. Please be especially careful and stay within the posted 10-mile speed limit in the complex. Some residents have noticed teens using the entrance gates at Outrigger and Seagate as a playground. Racing through them with skateboards, bikes and scooters. Please if you see this activity stop and ask who the parents are and report the incident. This is a very dangerous activity and can cause, as posted, very serious injury or death. Be Careful!
DROUGHT DECLARED! What is it we can do as Seagate residents to help EBMUD to reach their goal of 15 percent overall reductions in water use? The following are some of the drought friendly habits that will be expected of all of us.
* Wash you vehicle as little as possible and only use a hose with a shut off nozzle.
* Do not wash your deck or areas around your unit unless necessary
* Report to the management any sprinkler running more then 5 minutes.
* Take short showers-using low flow shower heads
* Take advantage of combined EBMUD and PG&E rebates for more efficient washers and toilets.
Our Board of Directors has made every possible effort over the past years to conserve water and is currently participating in EBMUD irrigation control program. But, it will take all of us to reach our goal. All Seagate residents will receive a flier in the mail with more detailed information in regards to conserving water. Please do all you can to comply. We cannot afford to pay for over usage.
We don't like to hear it but our homeowner dues will be raised 10% this year. All homeowners will receive a notice by mail detailing the economic reasons for this increase. Helping us keep our costs down are the volunteer committees and Board of Directors. Let them know you appreciate them when you see them walking around the complex keeping it clean and safe and running smoothly for everyone. Of course, it is always the responsibility of all residents to keep their area clean and to be sure that any contractor or vendor working on your unit respects our property. It costs all of us when we have to do a special cleaning, or replace landscaping. It is very important for all of us to report any activity that is destructive to our landscape or any other property. Please go through the proper channels and contact the M&C Association property manager Jack Brandt, @510-795-8308. Be active in keeping Seagate the beautiful place that it is and help keep our maintenance costs down. Keep your unit well maintained and if you get a fix it letter please comply as soon as possible. Every letter sent cost us all.
Trash is always an issue when we have so many people sharing common trash bins. If you notice that he recycle bin is overflowing you can put just your cans and bottles in the recycle and put the cardboard in the garbage. The only items that make money for the recycling are the cans and bottles. Remember once the items are in the recycle and garbage they are the property of ACI and it is against the law to remove any item. We all loose money when the cans and bottles are removed for personal profit. Also, never put any e-waste in the garbage or recycle. You can recycle cell phones and other electronics at Best Buy. Call the store and ask about their program. You can also find out how to get money for your old cells phone @collectaphone.com or greenphone.com. And there is always our local recycling center at 1900 Marina Blvd. Suite.
Homeowners Insurance is important to all homeowners and residents. Remember that the Association Policy now has a $10,0000 deductible. At the end of last year a member of our association filed a Small Claims action against the Association asserting that since their water pipes were under their concrete first floor and not within the walls of the unit, the Association should pay for the repairs not the member. Our Board President, Ray Ronco and our Manager Jack Brandt presented the Associations governing documents to the courts clearly outlining both the Association¡¦s and the owner¡¦s responsibilities with regards to the plumbing repairs. On 6/6/08 Commissioner L. Thomas Surh entered a judgment in favor of the Association. If you have any questions concerning insurance the Board suggests that you contact our Farmers Insurance Agent, Nancy DuPerroir at 510-728-1480. Thank you Ray and Jack for all the hours spent to get this case resolved in our favor.
Neighborhood Watch--- As we all know soliciting is strictly prohibited at Seagate. We have had a couple of incidents of solicitors coming on the property and refusing to leave. If this happens to you do not hesitate to call the police. They are trespassing and usually up to no good. Residents please do not send your children around the complex selling or talking about their school. It is still soliciting and not allowed.
Our surveillance cameras are working well and have discouraged some illegal activity but your careful observance is always he best weapon against crime. We have had some incidence of unfamiliar teens in the complex and one incident where there were several teens in a group. If you see something that doesn¡¦t look right always feel free to ask questions and call the police. Keep your cars locked and your garage doors closed and locked at all times. If you have a downstairs unit make sure your windows are secured before leaving your house. We are a safe community but, it always pay to be extra safe. Especially in the summer when someone might expect to find an open window.
Board meetings are the second Tues. of every month at 6:30 at the Marina Community Center 15301 Wicks. It only takes a few minutes to drive there and it is always interesting. As was mentioned before, our community is as pleasant as it is because of the many volunteers. We really need more people to help out. Some of the volunteers are doing double duty. Take some time to be a good neighbor and help to keep our expenses down by volunteering. Being out walking around keeping an eye on your community is a great way to meet people and keep in shape at the same time. If you can¡¦t make the meeting but, want to help or have any comments or suggestions send ideas to Seagatenews@comcast.net. Looking forward to seeing you or hearing from you. Don¡¦t forget our annual picnic in September. A flier will be sent out before the event. This is where you choose your board members and the food is good and free.

- Check out the Kaimanu Outrigger Canoe Club!Posted on: 2004-04-08Right in our own backyard! The San Leandro Marina is the primary practice site for the Kaimanu Outrigger Canoe Club, founded in 1977. They use our enclosed lagoon area to practice short distance, but also venture out into the channel to practice long distance paddling. They compete in many events and are part of the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association. Their goal is to 'introduce, train and teach men, women and children the ancient and modern art of Hawaiian Outrigger canoeing, regardless of race or creed.' Paddling outrigger canoes is a team endurance sport. It encourages sportsmanship, teamwork and respect for fellow teammates while still having fun and getting great physical exercise.
They have regular practices at the San Leandro Marina and two fundraising events every year. You can find some photos of their beautiful canoes in action on this website in “Neighborhood Pictures” -- then click on “Marina”.
For more information and photos, check out their website, http://www.Kaimanu.com., or call Debbie at (510) 895-0435.
- Volunteers needed...Posted on: 2004-05-04Love animals? Want to make a difference? Volunteers are needed at San Leandro's local animal shelters to exercise, groom, socialize, foster-home and, of course, adopt wonderful animal companions.
There's the Friends of Fairmont Animal Shelter, a county facility (call 667-7736 for more info) and also the Hayward Animal Shelter (293-7200) which serves the city of San Leandro. There are also opportunities to work at community events, participate in humane education, and as an adoption counselor. If you can spare a few hours every week or even every month, think about it!! Kitten season is here!
The animals thank you! -
For all you bird lovers out there...Posted on: 2004-07-02A friend sent me this link -- check out an amazing photo sequence of hummingbird nesting activity! Be sure to keep clicking on 'Next Page' to see all the amazing photos here. - Thanks to everyone...Posted on: 2004-10-13
... who attended the Annual Meeting and Barbecue -- it was a beautiful day, the food was great, and there were fun raffle prizes! No one walked away hungry, and we were glad to hear from a new candidate, Bernard Ashcraft.
Thanks to everyone who helped and we look forward to next year. - Slurry SealPosted on: 2005-07-29
The slurry sealing looks great, with fresh parking signs stenciled in. The roads look and feel great to drive on. Most of us had to walk a bit farther for a couple of days in order to park, but the weather has been great and since it only happens every 5-6 years, it seems well worth it!
This was submitted by an appreciative and concerned homeowner:
As everyone knows we recently had the roads resurfaced in the complex. Yes, it was inconvenient for us all for parking, but I am amazed at the reaction of some of the home owners. Our association and board members are doing a great job keeping our complex looking good which is of course keeping our home values up and keeping this a desirable place to live. This was very little to put up with for the short time.
Thank you to the association and board members for looking out for us all.

- Samuel Henry Schnear / “Sam”Posted on: 2005-08-25
“Never Fear, Sam is Here!”
Samuel Henry Schnear / “Sam”
July 23, 1919 – August 16, 2005
A longtime resident of San Leandro and Alameda passed away on August 16, 2005. Born in Jersey City, NJ on July 23, 1919, father of Dennis Schnear of Florida, also survived by his companion for the past three years, Estelle Rosenbaum and her family of Walnut Creek, as well as all his family from the funeral industry. Sam entered the Army in 1937 and served in the 16th Infantry, which he described as the very best. He switched to the Army Air Force and became a flight engineer. Sam was assigned to the 15th Air Force stationed in Ball, Italy as the part of a ten-man bomb squadron. Sam was a hero in every sense, receiving two Purple Hearts and numerous medals for service to his country. A former business owner of two service stations, he held the AAA towing contract for the area for twenty-five years. During this time he purchased an old house, tore it down and built a garage and auto body shop, known to this day as the Alameda Body Works, which grew to ten employees. After forty successful years in the business, Sam retired. Realizing in a very short period of time retirement wasn’t his cup of tea, he worked for Packard Limousine and Hearse Service for many years. His interest in the funeral business and his contacts gave him the opportunity to enter into another career which he loved, and he worked at numerous mortuaries throughout the East Bay and Walnut Creek areas. Sam was proud to serve on the Board of Directors for two terms at Seagate. All his lady friends will always remember him for his love of dancing. For the last ten years he was employed at Sorensen Bros. Mortuary. The staff remembers Sam’s definition of being on time was being at work two hours early -- as he entered the building, one would hear those famous words, “Have no fear, Sam is here.” Though we will miss Sam as our friend, our memories of his joy for life will last forever as he remains in our thoughts and prayers. “We Love You, Sam.”
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to George Mark Children’s House, 2121 George Mark Lane, San Leandro, 94578.
